My Hair Experience & Extension Q+A
I’ve had tape in extensions for the last few years but it hasn’t been an easy ride. I’ve dealt with my fair share of stylists who completely botched my hair (or my extensions). I literally deemed myself unlucky in the hair department after so many trial and error occurrences. One stylist dyed my hair lighter to match my extensions and give me some summer highlights and the worst possible thing for a blondie happened – it came out COMPLETELY orange. I then went to a different stylist that I had gone to in the past for them to fix the color. They tried to tone my hair and fix the orange tint, which came out great on my real hair. But they left it on the extensions too long and since extensions develop faster they ended up being completely grey/silver and fried off half of the ends… I was mortified. The tears were definitely streaming. And the cycle went on.
Random occurrences like that kept happening over the next year or so and I was so frustrated and tired of spending money on disappointing appointments. That’s when the hair gods came to my rescue and I met my girl, Chloe Besch! She completely changed the hair game for me and is the only person I trust to touch my hair. She always gives me the perfect blonde and makes my extensions look amazing!
I have super thin hair that literally won’t grow past a certain point, it’s so annoying! I posted a before and after picture on my story the other day and I cringed showing my real hair without extensions but I wanted you to be able to see how huge the transformation is! In case you missed it, here’s the before and after picture.
Hair magic! The picture on the right is from about 9 months ago when I first got these new extensions. They were so long and in perfect condition. Obviously as time goes on you have to trim the ends and they get a little shorter from natural wear tear. That leads me to the next part of this post – the Q+A! Here’s some basics and the questions that you have asked me over the months regarding hair:
How often do you have to get them moved up? Do you do it yourself?
It honestly depends on how fast your hair grows but 6-10 weeks (at the latest) is best! Even though my hair doesn’t grow long, my roots grow out fast. So I usually go between 6-8 weeks to get them touched up. And no you don’t do it yourself.
Can you dye your hair with the extensions in?
That’s not a great idea since extensions can take to color so intensely so Chloe and I would recommend not to try that. I get my hair dyed each time I come in to have them moved up. She takes them out, dyes my hair, and puts them back in. Learn from my horror story I mentioned earlier about my extensions turning grey and over developing. You don’t want that!
How much do they cost?
It all depends on the length you get, the color of the hair, etc. Blonde is more expensive but once again it depends on different factors.
What brand of extensions do you have?
Mine are Caio Bella Extensions and I have tape ins!
If you have thick hair but sometimes would like a bit more length, what kind of extensions would be best?
Having thick hair gives you an advantage so you can use whatever kind of extensions that you’d like! I have tape ins because they’re easier to hide in such thin hair because they lay flat. With thicker hair you have the option of getting the beads or any kind that you’d like because they’ll be hidden better. The beads are more expensive though so it all just depends on your preference!
Are they easily pulled out/loose?
Nope! As long as you take care of them. Don’t use any shampoos or hair products with sulfates or anything oil based up in your roots because that will cause them to slip easier.
Does the tape interfere with washing/styling your hair?
No! You can still wash, dry, and style your hair the same! It definitely takes some getting used to though because you have so much more hair. The first time I washed my hair after getting extensions I felt like it was a thousand pounds haha! You definitely get used to it though and you don’t notice.
Did you do mermaid hair?
No I didn’t!
Can you wear your hair up?
Sometimes this gets tricky because my hair is so thin so it can be hard to hide the tapes! If I wear it up I usually wear it in a braid or low pony or bun so it doesn’t pull. You’re not supposed to wear your hair in high buns and stuff like that because it can pull and damage your hair. If I’m just hanging out at the house sometimes I will, but if I wanted to wear something high in public I’d have to tie a bandana or headband to hide my tapes. Which is pretty cute honestly.
How long do they last?
It all depends on how you take care of them. I’ve had mine for about 10 months now, time flies! I’m pushing it and wanted to get a few more uses out of these but it is almost time for me to bite the bullet and get some more probably. Here’s a picture from a few weeks ago when I got it done. As you can tell they’re shorter than when I first got them but still very full!
